MAXQDA is a tool that is developed to support the coding of qualitative data. This application does not code for you, rather it allows you to sort your data and code and then move it to another environment for use later, such as an excel spreadsheet. You are required to develop the codes and through this you can combine subcodes to make overarching codes which fit within the themes you are covering in your research. This tool does allow some application to qualitative data interpretation, yet this is limited. It’s main focus is qualitative. It does come with an app for the smartphone so one can record data straight into the program when out in the field.

Pros:

  • great to organising quotes re codes and coding
  • keeps everything digital

Considerations:

  • need to backup before you log out
  • it doesn’t do any of the thinking for you – if this is not your preferred medium for analysing text then you will find it challenging.
